MINUTES of
BOARD MEETING of NOVEMBER 2, 2011
Time 19:13 – Convened Board Meeting
Steve Ruhl, BPAA President, as presiding Officer, convened the BPAA Board Meeting at 19:13 on November 2, 2011.
Other Board Members present were:
Charles Higgins, Vice President
Russell M. Heglund, Secretary
Malcolm Saunders, Chief Astronomer
Nels Johansen, Facilities Officer
Absent:
Dave Fong, Education Officer and Frank Schroer, Treasurer.
BPAA Bylaws require five Board Members to be present to constitute a quorum, therefore a quorum was present.

Time 19:22 – President's Report
S. Ruhl reports: The Astronomy Classes are doing well. We have a couple things coming due: (1) the annual letter & (2) the honorary dinner. Any suggestions for honorary dinner?
Vicki Saunders: lets honor Diane Colvin.
S. Ruhl: OK....lets honor Diane Colvin this year.
N. Johansen: The (rain water) leak is back.....that's why the (circular) stairs are wet.
Time 19:35 – Vice President's Report
C. Higgins reports: Russ Heglund dropped off a Grant Application to the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation this week....we asked for $12,000.00. Arlen (of Parks) and I have drafted up an agreement on land use. It is at the (Park) lawyers now. So we are waiting on the lawyer. We now might want to look at some sort of fund raising outreach.
V. Saunders: Maybe use T-Shirt sales to raise money for the Sundial.
C. Higgins: May be able to grow the organization by utilizing a FTE (by grant) and keep Observatory open 3 to 4 times a month. Board has to decide if it wants (BPAA) to grow.
N. Johansen: How about doing Radio Astronomy.....can do that day or night.
M Saunders: There is a guy in Bremerton doing Radio Astronomy.
Time 20:19 – Treasurer's Report (see attached report)
S. Ruhl reports: Total current assets as of Sept 30, 2011 were $22,748.83. Up 7.6% over last year.
Time 20:20 – Membership Report (see attached report)
S. Ruhl reports: Total memberships are 85, as of end of October, 2011.
Time 20:23 – Secretary's Report
R. Heglund reports: The order for the decals (for the Outside Plaque) has been sent in. We figure to get them back in six weeks. I am working on framing the Solar System (Solar Walk Images) to hang in the Observatory. About one-third done.
Time 20:29 – Facilities Officer's Report
N. Johansen reports: I have been thinking that if we put the Outside Plaque on the left side (of the entry door) it might catch water coming down.....and stain it. May need to put a flashing over it.
Time 20:37 – Chief Astronomer's Report
M. Saunders: No Report.
PROPOSED BYLAW CHANGE
Time 20:38 --- Proposed Bylaw to establish Communication Officer Board Position
S. Ruhl: Some comments have come in (since publicizing proposed bylaw change to the membership). We will vote on the proposed Bylaw next Board Meeting.
Time 20:40 --- Date Change for Monthly Star Partys
S. Ruhl: Star Party dates (for 2012) have been changed to second Saturday's of each month.
Time 20:41 – Fall Astronomy Classes
S. Ruhl: Only four people signed up for the Introduction Class. The Advanced Class may not happen (due to lack of sign-ups...).
Time: 20:59 – Adjournment
N. Johansen moved/S. Ruhl seconded, to Adjourn. Passed.
