Time 19:14 – Reading of Minutes from June 1, 2011 Board Meeting.
R. Heglund read minutes of June 1, 2011 Board Meeting.
S. Ruhl moved/M. Saunders seconded, that the minutes be approved as read. Passed.
Time 19:15 – President's Report
S. Ruhl reports: We had about 50 people at the last Star Party, and we had telescopes out on the lawn. Gregg Snyder gave a review of us on his blog. At the last couple of Park concerts they had trouble with the circuit breakers (inside the Observatory). Now there are two breaker box's on the outside of the Observatory.....they intend to trench a new power cable for independent power.
Time 19:23 – Vice President's Report
Higgins reports: The Sundial is on the Park Board agenda for September 15th meeting. I found that the Board President was the one to talk to. He thinks the rest of the Park Board is “onboard” to proceed with approval. Bill (the artist) agreed to pick-up the cost of the Foundry, and I will do the stone base. The Park Board President said they need to allow for public comment. Parks does not want to have a problem mowing around it. We need a slab large enough to keep the mower from hitting the Sundial. All the Park Board members saw the Sundial model when it was set-up this summer.
Time 19:38 – Treasurer's Report (see attached)
S. Ruhl reports: Current assets as of August 31, 2011 are $20,822.12.
Time 19:41 – Membership Report (see attached)
S. Ruhl reports: Membership is somewhat declined from same time last year.
Higgins: We need to have more presence on the weekend.
D. Fong: Maybe we could show sun spots during the day.
Saunders: maybe we should call our shows “Star Gazing”. Nobody knows what a “Star Party” is.
Time 19:52 – One Call For All Request
S. Ruhl: OCFA requires our participation in a September 16th Rally, at 5pm, and on September 30th an envelope stuffing party at the Filipino Hall, at 8:00 am. Let me know if you can come.
Time 1956 – Secretary Report
R. Heglund: The outside plaque....how should we decide on it's form and wording.
Saunders: Lets make it “historical”.
S. Ruhl: Show the telescope being hoisted up.
Time 20:09 – Facilities Officer Report
N. Johansen: I would like to move the outside lettering (on the Observatory) down a bit, so it's more readable.
Time 20:11 – Chief Astronomer's Report
M. Saunders: No Report.
N. Johansen: I got offer of a donated telescope and telescope kits. He lived near St. Helens. Got a 6 inch meade telescope. His name was Jeff Cox.
Time 20:23 – Education Officer's Report
Fong reports: The July Star Party had a full house for the Planetarium Show. It was a clear night, so we had telescopes out. We had a special show for members a couple weeks later....had a good night. We will start the next Astronomy Class on August 29 ….. with the Parks Department. We will charge $50.00 for six sessions.
Time 20:51 – Star Party Dates
Saunders: Lets try doing Star Partys on a regular basis. First quarter next year (January) we will try second Saturday of the month and we will call it “Planetarium Show and Star Gazing”
BOARD CONSENSUS: We will go ahead and try regular shows.
Time 20:57 – New BPAA T-Shirts
Saunders: Maybe we can use the “Bay-Hay and Seed” style of T-Shirt. Maybe even do a Sundial shirt. I will check with them.
Time 21:18 – Adjournment
S. Ruhl moved/D. Fong seconded, to adjourn the meeting. Passed
