MINUTES of
BOARD MEETING of SEPTEMBER 1, 2010
Time 1903 -- Convened Meeting
Steve Ruhl, BPAA President, as presiding Officer, convened the BPAA Board Meeting at 1903 on September 1, 2010.
Other Board Members present were:
Russell M. Heglund, Secretary
Frank Schroer, Treasurer
Nels Johansen, Facilities Officer
Malcolm Saunders, Chief Astronomer
Absent: Mike Browning, Vice President
BPAA Bylaws require five Board Members to be present to constitute a quorum, therefore a quorum was present.
No Visitors were present.
Time 1904 -- Reading of Previous Board Minutes
Minutes of the July 7, 2010 Board Meeting were read by R. Heglund, Secretary. S. Ruhl moved/N. Johansen seconded, that the minutes be approved as read. Passed.
Time 1910 -- President's Report
S. Ruhl reports: The MDA Show of 23 August had 80 kids. Mike (Browning) and I went to the Park Board meeting last week to do some ground work. As a follow-up we will meet with Terry Lande, Park Executive Director. Basically to find out how to work things through Parks.
Time 1913 -- Vice President's Report
No Report.
Time 1914 -- Treasurer's Report (see attached report)
F. Schroer reports: Total current assets as of 8/31/10 were $21,010.90. A check from One Call For All came in today.
S. Ruhl moved/M. Saunders seconded, to accept the Treasurer's report. Passed.
Time 1917 -- Membership Report (see attached report
F. Schroer reports: Total memberships as of 9/1/10 were 90.
Time 1918 -- Secretary's Report
R. Heglund reports: At the July 24th Bluegrass Festival (held on Observatory grounds) we set-up a information table just outside the Observatory doors. It was manned by myself and Jody Heglund, Vicki Saunders and Malcolm Saunders. Keith Ost gave tours of the Observatory all day long. Bill Baren-Mickle set up his full size wooden model of the proposed Sundial....up on the top of the berm, in the proposed location. We solicited public comment about the Sundial and Sundial Location and got thirty written responses.....all favorable (see attached).
Solar Walk: We are up to Mars. Only two more planets and Pluto to go.
Time 1922 -- Facilities Report
N. Johansen reports: No Report
Time 1923 -- Chief Astronomer's Report
M. Saunders reports: No Report.
Time 1927 -- Proposed Ticket Policy for Planetarium Shows
S. Ruhl: Thirty-five is sort of base number (that can fit in Planetarium). Maybe get ten (more) people on the side.
M. Saunders: Don't need (tickets) for the first show.
S. Ruhl: I will make-up some tickets for this month's Planetarium Show. We will hand out thirty-five tickets for the next show.
Time 1933 -- The Dome
S. Ruhl: Need to have something about the Dome.
M. Saunders: Do something about the Dome (wood) rot and need to replace it .......need to write up for the newsletter.
S. Ruhl: Need a cohesive approach.
Time 1935 -- Mike Browning, Vice President, arrives.
S. Ruhl: Should consider a blue tarp over it (Dome) during the winter.
M. Saunders: Probably easy to do.....with bunji cord.
Time 1940 -- Search for Education Director
S. Ruhl: It's continuing.
Time 1941 -- International Darksky Association
F. Schroer: Request to pay $50 dues to IDA came in.
Board Consensus: Go ahead and pay it.
Time 1943 -- Adjournment
M. Saunders moved/F. Schroer seconded, to adjourn the Board Meeting. Passed.
