BATTLE POINT ASTRONOMICAL ASSOCIATION
BOARD MEETING of JULY 7, 2010
Time 1909 -- Convened Meeting
Steve Ruhl, BPAA President, as presiding Officer, convened the BPAA Board Meeting at 1909 on July 7, 2010.
Other Board Members present were:
Russell M. Heglund, Secretary
Frank Schroer, Treasurer
Nels Johansen, Facilities Officer
Malcolm Saunders, Chief Astronomer
Absent: Mike Browning, Vice President
BPAA Bylaws require five Board Members to be present to constitute a quorum; therefore a quorum was present.
Visitor present: Vicki Saunders, Newsletter Editor
Time 1910 -- Reading of Previous Board Minutes
Minutes of the June 2, 2010 Board Meeting were read by R. Heglund, Secretary.
M. Saunders moved/S. Ruhl seconded, to approve the minutes as read. Passed.
Time 1916 -- President's Report and Education Report (see attached)
S. Ruhl reports: Had Planetarium Shows for over 350 people (since last report). We started show for YMCA kids on June 30th, but the projector quit. So I did Dome tours for about 50 kids. I canceled show on July 7th due to uncertainty about the Planetarium projector.
Sometime we have to get together with Parks.
Time 1919 -- Treasurer's Report (see attached)
F. Schroer reports: Total current assets as of June 30th is $21, 455.65. Sundial took in $14.00 at 4th of July booth.
M. Saunders moved/N. Johansen seconded, to accept the Treasurer's report. Passed.
Time 1922 -- Membership Report (see attached)
F. Schroer reports: Membership is pretty steady. We have 93 total memberships as of July 7, 2010.
Time 1926 -- Secretary's Report
R. Heglund reports: We are continuing work on the Solar Walk plaques. We have Saturn, Jupiter complete.....nearly complete with Venus and Mercury. Earth and Mars are next.
The Library needs shelving.
I took the small band saw and small table saw and donated them to the Rotary Auction (after consulting with Steve Ruhl, Malcolm Saunders and Nels Johansen).
Time 1930 -- Facilities Officer Report
N. Johansen reports: The outside sign needs fixing.
S. Ruhl: lets leave repair of sign's plexiglass until after summer vacation.
Time 1932 -- Chief Astronomer's Report
M. Saunders reports: No report.
Time 1932:30 -- Cancellation of August Board Meeting
M. Saunders moved/N. Johansen seconded, to cancel the August, 2010 Board Meeting. Passed.
S. Ruhl: The vandalism has happened twice now.
Time 1934 -- Planetarium Projector Problems and August Show
S. Ruhl: The projector just quit....no light or anything. I talked to digitalis and got a fix. It is working now. David Fong will be doing the August 14 Planetarium Show ......I want to know if there will be enough members around to support it.
R. Heglund: I plan to be there.
Time 1940 -- Bluegrass Festival
S. Ruhl: do we want to support it?
R. Heglund: Yes.....it is good publicity. I have set-up a table and passed out information at previous ones. I will look into supporting this one also.
Time 1941 -- Bainbridge Review
S. Ruhl: A reporter from the Bainbridge Review interviewed me today about the Planetarium.
Time 1947 -- National Science Foundation Grants
S. Ruhl: I assume I can cross-off the NSF Grant.
Time 1948 -- 4th of July Re-cap
S. Ruhl: It went reasonably well.
Time 1952 -- Member Profile and Benefits review
S. Ruhl: Not much was accomplished at the last membership meeting. We helped set-up a member's telescope for him.
Vicki Saunders, Newsletter Editor: I want to run calendar beyond Newsletter period.
S. Ruhl: Work it out between you and Diane Colvin.
R. Heglund: We need to make the words: Planetarium, Public Star Party, Free.....Stand out (in our notices....etc..)
V. Saunders: Bainbridge Library is putting on an Astronomy Display and we could supply them with Sundial stuff.....maybe pamphlets.
S. Ruhl: I received a Thank You letter from Gregory Hunt, for use of the Portable Planetarium at Peace Lutheran Elementary School in Bremerton area. He hosted six shows for over 200 students.
Time 2009 -- Adjournment
N. Johansen moved/F. Schroer seconded, to adjourn the Board Meeting. Passed.
