MINUTES of
BOARD MEETING of NOVEMBER 3, 2010
Time 1909 -- Convened Board Meeting
Steve Ruhl, President, as Presiding Officer convened the BPAA Board Meeting at 1909 on November 3, 2010.
Other Board members present were:
Mike Browning, Vice President
Russell M. Heglund, Secretary
Frank Schroer, Treasurer
Nels Johansen, Facilities Officer
Malcolm Saunders, Chief Astronomer
BPAA Bylaws require five Board Members to be present to constitute a quorum, therefore a quorum was present.
Visitors present were:
Vicki Saunders, Newsletter Editor
Dave Fong, Astronomy Professor
Cliff Johansen, Boy Scout
Time 1910 -- Reading of Previous Board Minutes
Minutes of the October 6, 2010 Board Meeting were read by R. Heglund, Secretary.
N. Johansen moved/ F. Schroer seconded, that the minutes be approved as read. Passed.
F. Schroer: I suggest sending preliminary copy of minutes to Board Members by e'mail, prior to the Board Meeting.....to save time.
S. Ruhl: sounds good...
R. Heglund: ok, I can do that.
Time 1916 -- President's Report
S. Ruhl reports: Dave Fong has agreed to (join the Board) as our Education Officer.
S. Ruhl moved/N. Johansen seconded, that Dave Fong be appointed Education Officer for remainder of 2010 term. Passed.
S. Ruhl: Islandwood contacted me last week about doing Planetarium Shows. Also, Kurt Robinson (Parks Board Director) made a telescope donation and wants thankyou note to be sent to his Dad, Lang Hendrik. I did a Cub Scout Planetarium Show last month ..... it was well received.
Time 1923 -- Vice President's Report
M. Browning reports: I will meet with Terry Lande, Parks Executive Director, on November 13th, for lunch.
D. Fong: Does Parks have a Master Plan?
M. Browning: It fell apart.
Time 1930 -- Treasurer's Report (see attached full report)
F. Schroer reports: The total current assets as of october 31, 2010 are $22,256.65.
The One Call For All money came in: $1,271.12.
S. Ruhl moved/M. Browning seconded, to accept the Treasurer's Report. Passed.
Time 1938 -- Membership Report (see attached)
F. Schroer reports: Total memberships as of November 11, 2010 are 94. We have two new members: Jonathan Fogelman and the Laeger family.
Time 1948 -- Secretary's Report
R. Heglund reports: I went to the Sun Lakes Astronomy Party last month. It is put on by the Bremerton Astronomy group (Olympic Astronomical Society) every year, in Eastern Washington's Sun Lake State Park. There were about fifty or sixty people there....we had cloudy skys first two nights....but the last night was clear, but windy. Could see Milky Way from horizon to horizon, when clear.

Time 1950 -- Chief Astronomer's Report
M. Saunders reports: No report.
Time 1951 -- NEW BUSINESS
Time 1951 -- Bainbridge Parks
S. Ruhl: Bainbridge Parks has hired a new Parks & Recreation Coordinator, Jeff Ozimek. He contacted me.....he is interested in working with us. He has worked at the Yerkes Observatory. I would like to invite him here to talk to us.
Time 1954 -- Annual Letter
S. Ruhl: (Each Board Member) write a report and send it to me.
Time 1955 -- Annual Acknowledgement Dinner
S. Ruhl: I would like to put it on for Harry Colvin this year. Think of things to send me to roast him. I will get the Plaque.
OLD BUSINESS
Time 1957 -- Telescope Pads
Cliff Johansen reports: I had about ten guys help me (prepare for concrete), the ground was really hard. We used lasers to level (concrete) forms. Fred Hill donated the 4 yards of concrete...”since it is for an Eagle Scout project”.
S. Ruhl: I would like you to do an article (for the Newsletter).
V. Saunders: They (Johansens) have sent me an article....I would like to send it around to other media.
S. Ruhl moved/M. Saunders seconded, to give Clifford Johansen $75.00 to give to people who helped him. Passed.
Time 2010 -- Dome
S. Ruhl: I was standing in it (Dome for 27.5 inch Ritchie Telescope) while it was raining....and it was dripping on me. I do want to get that Dome sealed.
M. Browning: I would like to borrow BPAA tables for the Bainbridge Island Turkey Trot (running event) put on by my wife.
Board Consensus: OK....go ahead and borrow tables.
V. Saunders: I would like to hand out this article for Board members to read. (hands out “The 95 Percent Solution” by Falk & Dierking....from the American Scientist magazine, Nov-Dec, 2010. (article makes the case that most americans learn science from sources outside of formal college & school classrooms settings........ such as in museums and public outreach science centers.)
V. Saunders: I would like to see someone “twitter” for the BPAA and also get BPAA on Facebook.
M. Saunders: The weather station computer is not putting info online anymore. It is still working......recording weather information. We need someone to get it going again.
Time 2040 -- Adjournment
