MINUTES of
BOARD MEETING of JANUARY 14, 2009


Time 18:09 -- Convened Board Meeting
President Harry Colvin, as presiding Officer, convened the BPAA Board Meeting at 18:09 on January 14, 2009.

Other Board Members present were:
Mike Browning, Vice President
Russell M. Heglund, Secretary
Malcolm Saunders, Chief Astronomer
Steve Ruhl, Education Officer
Nels Johansen, Facilities Officer

Absent: Frank Schroer, Treasurer

The Bylaws require five Board Members to be present to constitute a quorum, therefore a quorum was present. 

No Visitors were present.

Time 18:10 -- Previous Board Minutes
Minutes of the December 2, 2008 Board Meeting were read by R. Heglund, Secretary.
 H. Colvin moved/S. Ruhl seconded to accept the minutes as read.  Motion passed.

Time 18:16 -- President's Report
H. Colvin reports:  Rotary got back to me.  They sound very positive.  I explained to them that we needed $50,000.00 for matching fund.  I also heard from artist, Dave Berfield, (who wants to volunteer his talents), who I then referred to Russ Heglund. 

Time 18:21 -- Vice President's Report (see attached Fund Raising Activity report)
M. Browning reports:  The Annenberg Grant people referred our request to their California Office.  Expect an answer (to our letter of inquiry) by the end of January.   

Time 18:25 -- Treasurer's Report
H. Colvin:  I will defer the Treasurer's Report to the Annual Meeting.

Time 18:26 -- Membership Report
H. Colvin: I will defer the Membership Report to the Annual Meeting. 

Time 18:27 -- Secretary's Report
R. Heglund reports:  I was contacted by Bainbridge artist,  Dave Berfield.  He is volunteering to do his artwork for BPAA .  He does imprints on tiles.  He will be getting  together with me to show me examples of his work.  

Time 18:28 -- Facilities Report
N. Johansen reports:  No report this month. 

Time 18:29 -- Chief Astronomer's Report
M. Saunders reports:  I don't have anything to report on the 20" Dobsonian project.  Ben Krokower has the Losmandy mount, and is learning how to operate it......for use at Star Partys.
There was lots of water on the bench in the Dome, due to the heavy snow and rain we had.  It missed the Ritchie Telescope and our computers. 
Is there Board consensus that we should sell the Criterion telescope? 
Board Consensus:  The Chief Astronomer should sell the Criterion telescope. 
We will store the "parade" mount and tube more efficiently.

Time 18:35 -- Education Report
S. Ruhl reports:  The Carden Country School visited the Observatory on Dec 4th.  Paul Below and Kathy Koehler will not be doing the beginner session Planetarium Shows anymore. 
H. Colvin:  I suggest you call David Fong about doing beginner sessions. 

Time 18:39 -- New Business
H. Colvin reports:  No Policy business this meeting.  Vicki Saunders has received a Merit Award from the Society for Technical Communications, Puget Sound Branch.  She would like to go over to Bellevue and accept the award at their meeting.  We should cover her expenses.  H. Colvin moved/R. Heglund seconded, to pay up to $40.00 to cover travel expenses to accept the Merit Award.  Motion Passed.
There has been no further activity on grants, this month.

Time 18:45 -- Old Business
M. Saunders:  The Dome rotator motor is still not operational. 
H. Colvin:  I have no further information on the purchase of the Projector Lamp. 
M. Saunders:  What do we want to do with the old Boxlite Projector?  I will check it to see if it works. 

18:48 -- Adjournment
N. Johansen moved/M. Saunders second, to adjourn the Board Meeting.  Motion Passed.
