BOARD MEETING of JUNE 13, 2012
Time 19:12 -- Convened Board Meeting
Steve Ruhl, Board President, as presiding officer, convened the Board Meeting at 19:12 on June 13, 2012.
Other Board Members Present were:
Malcom Saunders, Chief Astronomer
Vicki Saunders, Communications Officer
Dave Fong, Education Officer
Charles Higgins, Vice President
Russell M. Heglund, Secretary
Nels Johansen, Facilities Officer
Absent Board Member:
Frank Schroer, Treasurer
BPAA Bylaws require five Board Members be present to constitute a quorum, therefore a quorum was present.
No absentee votes were submitted.
Time 19:13 -- Reading of May 2, 2012 Board Minutes.
R. Heglund read minutes of May 2, 2012 Board meeting.
N. Johansen moved/D. Fong seconded, to approve the minutes as read. Passed.
Time 19:18 -- President's Report
S. Ruhl reports: We received a $300 donation from the Silverwood School. I do two shows for the Oddysey School tomorrow. Parks is installing a 240 volt outlet for their trailer.
Dave (Fong)...do you want to do Fall (astronomy) classes?
D. Fong replies: Yes.
S. Ruhl: My wife and I would like to do a BPAA Potluck at our house.
Time 19:26 -- Vice President's Report
C. Higgins reports: The STEM guy is very much into telescopes. He is interested in doing a half day STEM class, each week ...... that we could put -on for a fee.
I haven't heard from Arlen (parks) since last meeting (regarding the Sundial agreement). But I know he said he is fine with it and has sent it to the lawyer.
Time 19:31 -- Vice President's Resignation
C. Higgings: I am officially resigning as of this meeting.
Time 19:35 -- Treasurer's Report
S. Ruhl reports: current assets are $21,453.19
Time 19:37 -- Membership Report
S. Ruhl reports: Membership is up to 80.
Time 19:39 -- Secretary's Report
R. Heglund reports: Not much to report. I stopped by our Post Office Box.
D. Fong: Can we start-up our membership meetings again? I have an idea for a format of a meting. Have a video and then telescope demonstrations. Maybe have them two weeks after Planetarium Shows.
S. Ruhl: Have to avoid Star Partys, like Table Mountain.
Time 19:48 -- Facilities Officer's Report
N. Johansen reports: No report.
Time 19:50 -- Chief Astronomer's Report
M. Saunders reports: We have been given a little 3 inch Bushnell reflector. Also have been offered a small refractor that might be used as a Solar Telescope. A Kingston School group may be showing here soon.....(to observe through the Ritchie Telescope).
Time 19:57 -- Education Officer's Report
D. Fong reports: A total of 85 people showed up for the show by Paul Middens, about the annualar eclipse event. The weather was really clear --- showed them Venus in it's crescent phase.
Had about 45 to 50 people for the Planetarium Show: "All Things Saturn"
We had a poor day for the Transit of Venus.....lots of clouds....saw it briefly for about five minutes.
I have another school group that wants to visit on August 20.
Time 20:10 --- Communications Officer's Report
V. Saunders: I need an artical on the Sundial.
R. Heglund: I will do it if you send me an outline of what you want.
Time 20:16 -- July 4th Plans
M. Saunders: I will set-up the booth.
D. Fong: I will help breakdown.
S. Ruhl: we need to have a couple Solar Telescopes (at the booth).
Time 20:34 -- Fund Raising
S. Ruhl: Bill Baran-Mickle sent me some ideas: (1) do a dinner; (2) contact Rotary Club; and (3) us "Kickstarter" website.
S. Ruhl: I think BPAA could put in $5,000.00 from our treasurery (towards the Sundial).
R. Heglund: I will ask Bill to set-up his full-scale model Sundial at the booth.
Time 20:56 -- Re-Schedule of July Board Meeting
S. Ruhl: I will schedule the July Board Meeting for Thursday, July 5th.
Time 20:59 -- Blue Grass Festival
D. Fong: Who is available to help that day? It will take place on Saturday, July 28.
M. Saunders: Need at least four or more people to handle tours and Solar Telescopes.
R. Heglund: I should be around to help that day.
