MINUTES of

BOARD MEETING of  MARCH 7, 2012

 

Time 1913 – Convened Meeting

Steve Ruhl, BPAA President, as Presiding Officer, convened the Board Meeting at 19:13 on March 7, 2012. 

 

Other Board Members present:

Charles Higgins, Vice President

Russell M. Heglund, Secretary

Malcolm Saunders, Chief Astronomer

Dave Fong, Education Officer

Nels Johansen, Facilities Officer

Vicki Saunders, Communications Officer

 

Absent Board Member:

Frank Schroer, Treasurer

 

BPAA Bylaws require five Board Members be present to constitute a quorum, therefore a quorum was present. 

No absente votes were presented.

 

Time 1914 – Reading of February 1, 2012 Board Meetings

R. Heglund, Secretary read minutes of February 1, 2012 Board Meeting.

S. Ruhl moved/V. Saunders seconded, to approve the miunutes as read. Passed.

 

Time 1919 – President's Report

S. Ruhl reports:  We did a show for the cub scouts on monday, February 6.  About 30 people showed up (parents and cub scouts).   

We got computer donations.....a couple desktop computers and two servers.

 

Time 1924 – Vice President's Report

C. Higgins reports:  I talked to Arlen (of Parks) today.....will meet (him) sometime tomorrow at Park Dept.  There is a Bainbridge Commons Foundation that I plan to apply to for funds. 

 

Time 1927 – Treasurer's Report 

S. Ruhl reports:  Total current assets, as of February 29, were $24,432.88.      

 

Time 1935 – Membership Report    

S. Ruhl reports:  Total memberships (to date) are 73.     

 

 

Time 1937 – Secretary's Report   

R. Heglund reports:  I plan to make kits of small sundials to hand-out to kids and adults to promote our Sundial Project.  They will be about five inches high on a wooden base.  (R. Heglund shows Board a demonstration model)  I will use a 4.5” PVC pipe for the basic arcs of this small “bow string” Sundial.  Included will be information on the sun, the earth's orbit and basic sundial information along with directions for assembly.  We might also use them to promote memberships.  Etc....   

 

Time 1955 – Facility Officer Report    

N. Johansen reports:  No Report.  Maybe get the outside Plaque up this weekend.  Should we get rid of the big white box and the Overhead Projector?

 

Board Consensus:  Get rid of them both.   

 

Time 2003 – Chief Astronomer's Report   

M. Saunders reports:  Changing the telescope loaner period to 60 days.  Require a $100.00 deposit for people who have not been members over 6 months. 

     

N. Johansen:  I thing there should be a sliding scale for deposits, based on the value of the telescope. 

 

M. Saunders:  I am putting eyepieces into “kits” to go with loaner telescopes.  I have ordered a new “spyder”, from Astrosystems, for the 16” string telescope.   I would like to buy rings and dovetail for the new Meade 6” telescope.    

 

Time 2041 – Education Officer's Report   

D. Fong reports:  About 53 people at last Planetarium Show in February.  Also have been contacted by a boy scout troop about doing a merit badge.     

City Dark paperwork was sent around to Board Members.  We should do something at the Venus Transit....do some big event around it.  Maybe set-up some solar telescopes.   Also the May 20th partial anular eclipse.         

The Introduction to Astronomy Course starts April 26.    

 

Time 2111 – Communication Officer's Report    

V. Saunders reports:  No report.
