BATTLE POINT ASTRONOMICAL ASSOCIATION
MINUTES of
BOARD MEETING of JANUARY 13, 2010
 
Time: 18:05 -- Convened Board Meeting
President Harry Colvin, as presiding officer, convened the BPAA Board Meeting at 18:05 on January 13, 2010. 
 
Other Board Members present were:
Mike Browning, Vice President
Russell M. Heglund, Secretary
Nels Johansen, Facilities Officer
Malcolm Saunders, Chief Astronomer
Steve Ruhl, Education Officer
 
Absent: Frank Schroer, Treasurer
 
The BPAA Bylaws require five board members to be present to constitute a quorum, therefore a quorum was present.
 
Visitor present: Vicki Saunders, BPAA Newsletter Editor
 
Time: 18:06 -- Reading of previous Board Minutes
Minutes of the December 2, 2009 Board Minutes were read by M. Saunders. 
H. Colvin moved/N. Johansen seconded, that the minutes be approved. Motion passed.
 
Time 18:14 -- President's Report
H. Colvin: No report.
 
Time 18:15:15 -- Vice President's Report
M. Browning: No report.
 
Time 18:15:30 -- Treasurer's Report
H. Colvin: I will present F. Schroer's report (sent to Board Members by e'mail) at the BPAA Annual Meeting (to follow this Board Meeting).
H. Colvin moved/N. Johansen seconded, to approve shift of Treasurer's Report to the Annual Meeting. Motion Passed. 
 
Time 18:16 -- Membership Report
H. Colvin: Let us defer this report to the next Board Meeting (due to lack of a full report).
 
Time 18:17 -- Secretary's Report
R. Heglund: No report.
 
 
 
Time 18:17:15 -- Facilities' Report
N. Johansen: The oil company has filled our tank. 
M. Saunders: I found the (oil company) bill and gave it to F. Schroer.
 
Time: 18:17:45 -- Chief Astronomer Report
M. Saunders: No report.
 
Time 18:19 -- Education Officer Report
S. Ruhl: The December, 2009 Planetarium Show had 25 people in attendance. The January, 2010 show had 60 people in attendance....we did two shows to accommodate them.
 
NEW BUSINESS
 
Time 18:20 -- Policy on Intern Manager Position
M. Browning: I will send policy on Intern Manager position to BPAA Secretary.
 
Time 18:21 -- High School Student project     
H. Colvin: Haven't heard recently from the high school student. He needs to show up so we can talk to him (about a project). I will put the High School student project on the agenda for next Board Meeting. 
 
Time 18:21 -- Damage to BPAA Outside Bulletin Board
H. Colvin: I guess this (damage) happened about a week and half ago on a Saturday.
N. Johansen: The Battle Point Park had other things damaged. Parks called the police about it.
H. Colvin: The (vandals) also broke our overhead light (at the entry door) and the Bulletin Board.
N. Johansen: Let's repair the outside lights and put a cage around it.  
 
Time 18:30 -- Planetarium Pointer Light
R. Heglund: A classic light pointer, similar to one used in the San Francisco Planetarium, has been donated to BPAA, to use in our planetarium. It was donated by Elliot Swanson of Brownsville. 
Board Consensus: Send him an Thank You letter. 
 
Time 18:31 -- Award Plaques
H. Colvin: Evergreen Trophys in Bremerton, still has plaques on file. I will get three plaques for the awards dinner. I will try (to arrange) for February 20th for the Awards Dinner. 
 
Time 18:40 -- Battle Point Park Master Plan
M. Browning: The second (master plan) meeting on December 15 was much like the first. A collaboritive meeting with public participation. I also attended the December 17th Park Board meeting. They are going to list a couple projects to be put into the plan. Following the December 17th Board Meeting, I asked for a meeting with an architect and their consultants. 
Restrooms had come up on their list. We need to watch how they do the (plan) for the road.
 
Time 18:56 -- Ritchie Telescope Dome Tours and National Science Foundation Grants Update
H. Colvin: I will postpone Dome Tour and NSF Grant discussions to next Board Meeting. 
 
Time 18:57 -- Adjournment
M. Saunders moved/S. Ruhl seconded, to adjourn. Motion passed.
